Suikerbossie – She bite me 3 times

Ok so it was not funny when it happened however as I slowly heal and get over it I can share my experience. Yesterday I had my first fall off my bike, not a big one however was my first fall none the less. See all started well into the Race for Victory race which is said to be a long flat then a small bump and another long flat. Well the bump must be one of the steepest accents I have seen in a long time and heard that this accent takes you to the highest point in the Witwatersrand.

Well after completing the first long flat I had my timings wrong and learned that we only hit the climb at after 50 km’s and not after 35.  Well stated the climb and all was going well until I started what was the start of the KOM (King of the mountains – I thought it was the end)  Well the little bump was longer than expected and alot steeper. I could not peddle any more and had to give the win to the mountain and dismount. I did this and pushed for a few meters. On regaining my breathe I started to feel strong again so I decided to mount up again. Well I got the left shoe and while putting the right foot in I toppled to the left introducing my hip to the tar. Ok so it was more of a topple than a fall – try explaing that to my sore arse today!

So that is twice now, once falling off and once getting off the bike, the 3rd bite came shortly after that realising how far I still needed to go before cresting the summit. If you have ever tried to walk in cleats you will know that it is no fun at al. So shoes came off and up I went in my socks….

Leaned another thing on this ride full of education. I learned that as a beginner ride you also have a lactate threshold, needless to say the last long flay of 30 odd kilometers was hectic, the full on head wind was blowing up a gale which added to my discomfort over the remainder of the race.

To the people that organized the event- You sadists! OK just kidding just wanted to say thank you very much, it was excellent! Had loads of fun, it was well organized and well executed, well done! and thank you!
