Pedestrians – right of passage?
Wow it is crazy just returned from a weekend away and I must say that pedestrians on the high ways and byways of our country have no fear for motorists? I do not find it strange that over 4000 pedestrians get killed on our roads each year. It seems that the pedestrians have a right of passage on the roads and walk where they please and almost with a taunting attitude to say *dare hit me* well wake up over 4000 pedestrians are killed on our roads each year. I have read reports that there is a 10% chance of survival when hit by a car at the speed of 65 km an hour. This is just worse when you try and walk across freeways where cars are traveling in excess of 100km an hour.
Yes I understand there are foot bridges that are not convenient and it is saves time to stroll across the road as you please, however please make an effort to do it quickly!~ Get across the road and out of harms way as fast as possible! Do not loiter on the roads around your town, have respect for the road and know the consequences of not taking it seriously enough.
Here is an article that illustrates my point click here
I almost get the feeling that there is some air of entitlement to walk across the road as slow as possible and have people break and wait for you. Have you ever been to the UK? Well there you have the air of entitlement as a pedestrian when you are cross the road at a pedestrian crossing as I believe if you knock over a pedestrian on a pedestrian crossing you face loosing your license.
On that note the pedestrians are not the only ones to blame, motorists are as well, have you ever used a pedestrian crossing in a parking lot? The ones at Makro spring to mind, well there you should really have right of way, I personally have seen people almost knocked over on a similar crossing. The drivers need to take their fair share of blame for these staggering numbers of deaths on our roads.
