Giving change
Something I learned from my old man during my days of bar tending was how to give change to maximize the chance of getting a tip and the size of your tip. During the last week I have noticed how many servers do not know this simple rule. You need to give change that makes it easier for the customer to give you change. Here is an example of what I am getting at. You bill comes to R37.90 now the change is R12.10 now if you give change in the form of a R10 note and some coins the chance of you only getting a R2.10 tip is very high, unless they are a conscious tipper in which case they may look in their wallet for another R2 or so to tip with. Now if they do not have any other coins you will end up with R2.10 for your tip. Now if you gave change in the form of 2 R5 coins and R2.10 they chances are they will leave a R5 for you…this is doubling the amount of a tip as well as extending the chance of decent tip. Now this may not sound like alot lets do the % on it. R37.90 a 10% tip is R3.80, so if you are left with R2.10 this is a 7.9% tip is aprox 5.5% now if you get R5 this is a just over 13%. This means that if you turn over R1000 in a shift it is the difference of earning R55 as apposed to R130.
Big difference!
